This “Design of the Week” features Carolyn’s Shade Gardens!
Our Design of the Week is featuring Carolyn’s Shade Gardens, a plant nursery in Bryn Mawr, PA.
Established in 1992 by Carolyn Walker, Carolyn’s Shade Gardens sells perennials for shade with a specialty in snowdrops, hellebores, hostas, and native plants.
The shirt, designed by Excel artist Mike Hegedus, features a native wild columbine. “The wild columbine has been my logo since the beginning and reflects our commitment to native plants,” explains Carolyn.
Carolyn’s focus is on providing high-quality perennials for shade that will survive with low maintenance along with knowledgeable advice about all aspects of gardening. “We started a blog [CarolynsShadeGardens.com] in 2010 to educate customers about plants and gardening issues,” she shares.
And while Carolyn has built a large following online, customers can also tour her production and display beds and shop at her nursery. “We have a two-acre display garden, which is grown and maintained organically (since 1983) and with no regular watering. Customers can walk around and see the plants for sale in a landscape setting and decide what will work in their garden.”
“We only sell plants that we have grown ourselves and that have thrived without additional water or fertilizers in our area. This ensures high customer success,” Carolyn explains. “Customers often thank me for selling them plants and tell me that nothing died,” she laughs.
Carolyn’s Shade Garden was recently selected to be one of 120 “must-visit destination gardens and nurseries in the Northeast US” in the guidebook The Garden Tourist by Jana Milbocker.
“Being featured in The Garden Tourist inspired me to go through my old photos and put together a tour of our whole garden,” says Carolyn. [See the wonderful blog feature here.]
“We are open for three major open houses in the spring plus scheduled appointments on Fridays,” says Walker. “Customers sign up for emails advising them of events and the issuance of catalogs from which they can order.”
Customers travel from as far north as Connecticut and from as far south as Washington DC, and Carolyn also provides service nationwide through mail order.
Be sure to subscribe to Carolyn’s Shade Garden blog and connect with them on Facebook.
