Our “oversized” Design of the Week proves that everything is bigger in Texas.

Founded as a regional carrier in 1978 by Martin and Phoebe Hendrix, Specialized Transport Service, Inc. (STS Heavy Hauling) has grown into a large cargo and freight company with branches out of San Antonio and Dallas. Darrell Hendrix, STS VP Operations, continues the family business as a heavy hauler.

“We have the capability of hauling many different types of loads that are oversized and overweight,” Darrell says. “It is much more challenging and requires a lot of pre-planning and attention to detail.”

With heavy hauling, every load is often a unique situation and too large for road travel without an escort and special permit. “Every day is a challenge,” Darrel continues, “and we constantly approach jobs with the attitude of ‘how will we get this done’ versus ‘that can’t get done.’ It is fun and rewarding.”

That spirit of STS was instilled from the beginning, as their website says founder Martin Hendrix, “works it like a job… enjoys it like a hobby.”

The fun has led to interesting jobs and opportunities, as the team had the chance to appear on the popular television show Extreme Home Makeover.

“It was their first show in Texas, and their theme was ‘Everything in Texas is Big,'” Darrell recalls of the experience. “We had a blast, and the crew was great to work with. They treated us very well.”

The STS t-shirt design, of course, features one of their haulers in action, transporting an oversized load. Along with their logo and slogan, the design also features the flags of the United States and the State of Texas with a diamond plate texture applied. The flags are the favorite detail of Hendrix. “We wanted to showcase one of our rigs along with showing our pride in our state and our country.”

Their company slogan, “Where Performance Takes Preference Over Price,” is featured prominently.

“We pride ourselves on our service,” says Darrel, “and we believe that better service should command a better price. It is our goal to provide the best service in all aspects, from customers’ ability to contact us quickly, drivers that show up on time, and constant contact with the customer to let them know the status of their delivery.”

Similarly, Darrel was pleased with the performance of Excel during his shirt designing experience. “Excel’s designers made it simple and understood what I was trying to convey,” he says. “They are a pleasure to work with, and we will definitely work with them again in the future.”
