Our Design of the Week is our “Real Men Wear Pink” shirt, designed to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. In conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s program of the same name, this shirt encourages men to join the fight against breast cancer. We offered this shirt as a fundraiser for businesses, and Smail Auto Group of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, completed the largest order.

Every October Smail Auto Group “goes pink” to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer. Their “#SmailCares” efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of the past 8 years, money that goes to local breast cancer charities and organizations.

This year, Jeff Smail Jr has become directly involved in the campaign as a member of the 2019 Class of Real Men Wear Pink in Westmoreland County. Together with other “distinguished men of the community,” Smail has been challenged to lead the fight all through the month of October by wearing the color pink every day and raising awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.

“It all started a few years ago when we started decorating our buildings with pink words of encouragement to support those battling breast cancer,” says Jeff Smail Jr. “Ever since then we’ve been decorating our dealerships every October, showing support, and also donating $125 for every vehicle sold in the month to various local breast cancer charities.”

This year Smail Auto Group teamed with Excel to create t-shirts as an additional fundraiser for their campaign. With “Real Men Wear Pink” on the front and their “Smail Cares” logo on the back, Smail offered the shirts to employees, friends, and family. The response was overwhelming.

“I was completely blown away,” says Smail. “I was just overwhelmed with the response we got from the employees and how many people came up and thanked me for doing this for the charity. We had a goal to sell about 50 shirts, and we put in an order for over 130! That was all done by our employees. I didn’t go around asking for donations. I probably could have sold even more if we did that.”

The shirts ended up not only raising money; it ended up bringing the Smail Auto Group employees together even more strongly as a team.

Smail Auto Group Marketing Director Rebecca Robbins says, “We are really excited because we’ve had more exposure and more participation than we originally expected. And everyone’s really had a lot of fun wearing the shirts. So that’s really exciting, a nice way to partner with Real Men Wear Pink.”

Smail employee Corey Heider adds, “The shirts really helped us come together as a team. It reminds me of the pep rallies in high school, this wave of spirit. We’re making a difference for this thing that makes darkness for so many people.”
