This “Design of the Week” features Kyuki-Do Martial Arts of Lake in the Hills!
Our Design of the Week is Kyuki-Do Martial Arts of Lake in the Hills located in Algonquin, IL.
Founded in 2007 by Christine & Rick Bjorkquist, Kyuki-Do of LITH offers martial arts programs for kids of all ages.
“Martial arts is about more than just kicking and punching,” says the Bjorkquists. “Our kids’ martial arts programs work with children on age-specific skills that help their overall development.”
Kyuki-Do is a Korean martial art that primarily incorporates elements of Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido and Judo. It is designed to be practical, versatile, and effective at a variety of different ranges and in a variety of different situations. Kyuki-Do is more than just an effective system of self-defense; however, it is a martial art that encourages students to realize their own potential, both physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Students of Kyuki-Do learn discipline, self-control, patience, persistence, and respect for themselves and others. Students are expected to continually strive to perfect themselves, both in the dojang and in every other area of their life.
For their shirts, Kyuki-Do of LITH held a contest with their students. “We started with the quote,” says Rick, “and let the students come up with the image that fit their idea of the quote. Then, Christine and I add to the original design to achieve our vision.”
Rick and his team have ordered several shirts through Excel over the years, and he is continuously impressed with the process.
“Leslie and the design team at Excel are fabulous to work with each step of the process,” he explains. “I like to take many ideas and send them and begin the merging process of, ‘I like this part of image A and let’s add this part of image B and use the background from image C.’ Then, the artists at Excel make what’s in my head pop out on to the shirt.”
The result of the collaboration is a great shirt with multiple benefits, “In the Martial Arts, having a comfortable base layer under our uniforms is always a huge plus,” says Rick. “Add in the extreme designs, and now we have a shirt BOTH our parents and students love to wear!”
Looking good and feeling comfortable while striving to achieve personal improvement. Says Rick, “We get to help the kids, youth, and teens of today become whom they were born to be!”
