This “Design of the Week” features Helivision, LLC!
Our Design of the Week is Helivision, LLC, an aerial camera production company that produces HD and 8K Ultra HD footage for the Motion Picture, TV, and Live sporting event industry.
Founded in Charlotte, NC in 1993 by Buddy Knotts, Helivision has grown to be a nationwide company with 12 employees, recently working a high-profile helicopter role in “The Walking Dead,” and “Fear the Walking Dead.”
With Emmy Award-winning pilots and camera operators, Helivision has provided aerial cinematography for companies such as Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, 20th Century FOX, History Channel, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Warner Brothers, The Discovery Channel, ESPN, ABC, NBC, and many others.
Their shirt, illustrated by Excel artist Dave Bench, features Helivision’s flagship helicopter, “Lady,” and celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the company. Our art team worked with Kevin Knotts, Chief Pilot and COO for Helivision, to come up with the design.
“We wanted a shirt that, with one look, told the story of what we do,” explains Kevin. “First, our classic logo on the left chest. The helicopter on the back is an image of our first helicopter that we started the company with, shooting aerials with the Cineflex mounted on the nose.”
While there are many helicopter companies, there are not many that specialize in Aerial Film Production like Helivision. With experience in helicopter camera stabilization systems such as Cineflex, GSS, Wescam (Pictorvision) and Spacecam, and four aircraft and professional grade drones, Helivision has the capability to work with a variety of budgets to provide awe-inspiring imagery for any project.
In May, Helivision’s Commander in Chief Buddy Knotts was awarded FAA’s highest award, the “Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award.” But even with their decades of awards and experience, their work ethic centers around Buddy’s motto, “We are only as good as our last job.”
Similarly, Kevin credits the Excel team’s hard work with bringing their shirt to life.
“Our experience with Excel was excellent. From the sales guy to the artists, all the way down to the billing department, the whole Excel team was excellent to work with.”
“It was a good process,” says Kevin of working with our team of illustrators. “We sent in an idea of what we wanted and the Excel Sportswear artists were very in tune with what our vision was. There were some minor changes in colors, but the design pretty much stayed the same,” says Kevin. “I wanted some film strips around the helicopter to reinforce what we do… film production work.”
When Kevin received his shirts, his favorite part of the final design was the realistic representation of Buddy’s helicopter that started it all. “It looks just like our real ‘Lady.'”
