This “Design of the Week” features the Aberdeen Fire Department!
When our customer’s tradition influences one of our own: our Christmas-themed Design of the Week is once again Aberdeen Fire Department.
Over the years, Aberdeen FD has produced shirts every December for their annual “Christmas Street” fundraiser. Always featuring Santa and his helpful elves, the designs tell a festive story that always ties in with the department.
Whether they’re helping Santa with his sleigh or dealing with the antics of a Grinch, the firefighting elves are there to save the day, just like the Aberdeen FD.
This year, the shirt celebrates the transitional period of the department as they move to a new station. The old station is being demolished, Santa and his elves are packed up and on their way to the new facility illustrated at the bottom. “Out with the old… in with the new.”
“This is a major project that has been in the works for about six years,” says Edward Budnick of Aberdeen FD. “We thought it was perfect timing to include this milestone on our shirt. The concept was based on the demolition of our old station, which we have been in since 1971, leading us into a new facility next year that we hope will serve another 45 to 50 years.”
In years past, Aberdeen FD had their Christmas shirts printed on green, red, black, grey, or even navy shirts. For this 2019 design, the department chose a maroon long sleeve shirt. “Everyone seems to really like the design and the color of the shirt, which is also different,” says Budnick.
Once again, the design was illustrated by Excel artist Eric Poole. “Yes, this has been a tradition,” Eric says. “This coming year, they’re moving into a new fire building, so they were tearing down the old one and moving onward.”
“… whether or not they used a wrecking ball controlled by a reindeer is undetermined,” he adds.
